Abstract
ONE DAY IN February 1991 a Chinese film previously noted mostly for its radical use of color - Ju Dou - became an international political event. Politics and culture (once again) became intimately intertwined as China was honored with its first Oscar nomination at the same time that China was castigated for trying to censor this film, and hence control representations of "China."
