Abstract
This book draws on extensive fieldwork — particularly in Thailand during the 1995 election campaign and supplementary research in the Philippines — to examine the role of civic groups and pollwatching organisations in monitoring elections and addressing political corruption in Southeast Asia. It discusses the development and activities of civic election monitoring efforts, the interactions between civil society and the state, and how electoral processes and corruption shaped political change within the region following the financial crisis of 1997.
