Abstract
It isn’t hard to draw glib parallels between the fall of Saigon in 1975 and the Taliban’s recent capture of Kabul. From there, it becomes easy to forecast the imminent retreat of America from the world. Too easy, perhaps.A more careful examination of the history of US relations with Southeast Asia at the end of the Vietnam War offers a somewhat different conclusion, complete with ramifications for the US presence in Southeast Asia today, Afghanistan or not.
