Abstract
How did students in colonial schools engage with Shakespeare? How can Shakespeare education facilitate the emergence of a new national culture? This article explores these questions by analysing student performances in 1950s Singapore, then a British colony preparing for self-governance with a multicultural population drawn from diverse parts of Asia.
