Abstract
In an invited commentary published on the eve of Singapore's 50th year of independence, SMU Behavioural Sciences Institute director Professor David Chan discussed the need to guard against our own human self-serving tendencies in order to truly put Singapore above self. He explained the psychology of the self and how human self-serving tendencies can be overcome by being aware of them and cultivating positive attitudes.
