Abstract
The potential of information technology (IT) to create business value in the operations of the businesses that in it is undeniable. However, in recent years, there has been as much debate in business periodicals as there has been in academic journals about the extent to which such value flows to the firm, versus the firm's buyers and suppliers, and society at large. Amid this debate there is increasing agreement in the information systems research community that the search for better tools with which to measure the business value of IT investment are even more key.
