Abstract
Labor requirements on the factory floor are being affected by a wide range of automation technologies in addition to robotic manipulators, such as computer-controlled machine tools, materials-handling systems, and programmable controls. And as authomation in general becomes "more robotic" (i.e., more programmable, more adaptable, and more multifunctional), the distinctions between what is and what is not an industrial robot will become increasingly blurred.
