Abstract

Recently there has been a noticeable ‘turning point’ in the thinking of business school leaders and their stakeholders about the impact, purpose and value of business schools in society. Evidence from faculty, students and professional organisations, such as the Aspen Institute surveys in the United States of America (US) and the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) manifesto on the future of management education, clearly suggests that there should be a much greater focus on tackling pressing societal issues, including sustainability (e.g., the UN Sustainable Development Goals), inequality, and social and financial inclusion. More balanced and holistic models of management education have also been proposed, with the higher purpose of nurturing greater social responsibility among all stakeholders as well as enhancing students’ moral and ethical compass in an increasingly uncertain world. One of the benefits in the context of responsible management research has been the formation of the Responsible Research in Business and Management (RRBM) Community in 2015, whose overarching aim is to promote socially responsible research in the business world. Thus, under the inspiring and energetic founding and leadership of Professor Anne Tsui, RRBM was launched. Indeed, this paper describes the great success it has already received in terms of membership, publications and awards (108 articles and 15 books by 2023) as well as five research summits (in the US and Europe) which encourage global interaction and collaboration in research partnerships. The paper points out the future strategies and directions involving ongoing projects and even wider dissemination of socially responsible and impactful management research.
