Abstract

In June 2024, the Group CEO of Thai Beverage Public Company Limited (ThaiBev) outlined the company’s risk management practices and sustainability drive to stakeholders. With Thailand facing increasing water stress, climate risks and shifting consumer expectations, the company sought to emphasise environment, social and governance practices to balance growth with conservation. This would be in line with the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) advocated by the Thai monarchy, which promoted development in a holistic and sustainable manner.

Despite early challenges, ThaiBev had emerged as a sustainability leader in the beverage industry. It had reduced carbon emissions by optimising logistics networks and introducing a fleet of electric trucks. It had expanded its portfolio of healthier beverages and implemented risk management practices to ensure business continuity. Socially, it provided more employee advancement opportunities through skills training. The Group CEO was pleased that these transitions not only improved sustainability performance but also profitability.

This case may be used for graduate, postgraduate and executive education classes. Learning objectives for the students include understanding the costs and benefits of being a sustainable company, evaluating how companies integrate ESG into strategy and discussing how the transition to sustainability can provide opportunities for companies.
