Abstract
The 2007–2009 financial crisis revealed serious shortcomings in the regulation of financial institutions and markets and prompted a fundamental rethinking of financial regulation design. As the financial system has become increasingly complex and interconnected, the pace of evolution continues to accelerate. It now seems clear that regulation must focus on the financial system as a whole, but this poses significant challenges for regulators. This book outlines how to address those challenges. By examining financial regulation from a comprehensive and multidisciplinary perspective, this work considers the underlying policies and objectives of regulation using economic, financial, and legal methodologies. It also examines regulation in an intentional and dynamic way by framing the book in terms of what the financial system does rather than what financial regulation is. By analyzing specific regulatory measures, the book provides readers with the opportunity to evaluate different regulatory options and encourages critical reflection on the design of financial regulation.
