Biography:

Dean, Lee Kong Chian School of Business, SMU, 2003–2005

Professor David Montgomery served as the second dean of the Lee Kong Chian School of Business from 2003 to 2005. It was a period of rapid growth for the school—hiring faculty, building a research atmosphere, developing professional degrees, and continuing to make SMU better known in the academic community. Professor Montgomery is known for his use of the phrase 'balanced excellence' to describe a commitment to excellence in teaching and research.

In July 2003 he awarded degrees to SMU’s very first graduates—students completing the master of science in applied finance. During his tenure, two centres were started, the Centre for Marketing Excellence and the Centre for Teaching Excellence. In 2005, SMU hosted the first Asian conference of the Marketing Science Institute, and in June 2007, SMU hosted the inaugural Marketing Science Conference in Asia. Professor Montgomery is currently dean emeritus and a visiting professor of marketing and management at SMU, as well as emeritus faculty at Stanford University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Professor Montgomery spent the first five years of his career at the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Then he returned to his alma mater, Stanford University, where he was part of the faculty for 33 years. His research interests include analysis of competitor response and decision making, global marketing, decision support systems for strategic marketing, and empirical analysis of the manufacturing/marketing interface. He was the Sebastian S Kresge Professor of Marketing Strategy from 1992 to 1999.

He has served on the editorial boards of seven marketing and management journals, and has published over 100 articles and ten books. His paper, "First-Mover Advantages", co-authored with Marvin Lieberman, won the Strategic Management Journal’s 1996 best paper award.

Professor Montgomery serves on the Executive Directors Council of the Marketing Science Institute. In 2002 he received the American Marketing Association award for career contributions to marketing strategy. He was named as fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences in 2009 in recognition of his research contributions to marketing science and management.

He earned a bachelor in electrical engineering, masters in mathematical statistics and business administration, and a PhD in management science from Stanford University (USA).
