Abstract: Pet owners go to great lengths to ensure that their beloved pets will be taken care of after the owner’s death. However, the common law has traditionally regarded trusts for pets as invalid. In this paper, the author examines the common law issues surrounding pet trusts and the historical development of pet trust statutes in the United States. Ultimately, this paper posits that with the rise of pet ownership in Singapore, the enactment of express legislation would best safeguard the wishes of pet owners and ensure the care of the vulnerable animals that are left behind.
