Description

As open data becomes an increasingly key practice in research, understanding how data are used is becoming essential to inform data policies and facilitate inclusion of data in research assessment. Different groups have started categorizing uses for their own purposes, but the community lacked consensus on how to conceptualize the types of uses of datasets. This hinders comparison of reports on the uses of data, and their transferability into evaluation processes. The FORCE11 Data Usage Typologies Working Group is creating a community-led typology to capture the diverse ways in which datasets are (re)used, and to enable a shared understanding of data use across meta-research, monitoring and research evaluation. Upon the completion of the typology, the group will work on steps to facilitate its use within the data ecosystem.

This session invites participants to help shape the next steps for the Data Usage Typology. How can we best facilitate inclusion of data-usage elements in metadata workflows? What are implementation opportunities for researchers, repository managers and institutions as part of their data activities?

Through an interactive discussion, we will address these questions and collect participants’ input on ways to facilitate the use of the typology and on implementation pilots we could pursue to bring the typology to practice.
