Description

Field stations sit at the frontlines of environmental and ecological research, yet they often lack the digital tools and capacity to fully participate in open science practices. FAIR Station is a Moore Foundation-funded initiative building a reservation and data management platform that allows field stations of all sizes to capture and share data with minimal administrative burden. By embedding open science best practices directly into the daily workflows of researchers, we make data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) from the point of collection.

The first phase of our FAIR Station project focuses on iterative development with a diverse group of field stations, from well-funded research hubs to small, remote sites, to ensure that the system is scalable, cost-effective, and deployable with minimal local technical expertise. In addition to the technical platform, we are co-developing community practices around governance, training, and sustainability to ensure long-term viability.

This talk will share lessons learned from co-design sessions, early prototypes, and the process of aligning with broader open infrastructure such as DataCite DOIs, ROR IDs, and metadata standards. Attendees will leave with practical insights on embedding FAIR principles in small-scale research environments and will be invited to join the project’s next phase, piloting FAIR Station at their sites, contributing to feature roadmaps, or collaborating on training materials.
