Description

The FORCE11 Scholarly Communication Institute (FSCI) has been a central project for FORCE11 for a decade; the upcoming virtual institute in July 2026 will be our 10th edition. Martin Brennan, the Director of FSCI and the Scholarly Communication Education Librarian at UCLA, will lead a group composed of other FSCI leaders in attendance at FORCE2026. In this interactive session, we hope to review the last decade of FSCI events, and conduct a structured group discussion on how FSCI can expand its partnerships in this region and further establish itself in this vibrant community.
The first few years were hosted at UC San Diego; from 2019 through 2026, in partnership with the UCLA Library, FSCI has offered 119 unique and valuable courses taught by 200+ volunteers and serving 1700+ FSCI attendees, with more to come this year. We have hosted more than 20 impactful plenary events with high quality speakers and helped spur many FORCE11 working groups. Our instructors, speakers and attendees are Scholarly Communication working professionals in academic librarianship, scholarship and research, administration, and publishing roles. We learn from each other, we make connections, we work to solve problems in our field.
With our already strong representation in the region, and with this conference and our recent collaboration with the Charleston Conference Asia held in Bangkok in January of this year, FSCI has made a clear effort to introduce ourselves to the region. In this session, we will discuss how FSCI has been successful so far, and how the institute can continue to expand its impact through collaborations with willing institutions, whether in Southeast Asia or in other regions of the world. We hope you can join our discussion, and be a part of FSCI’s future.
