Abstract

When we began our term as Coeditors of the Journal of Marketing Research (JMR), on July 1, 2023, we implemented JMR's Research Transparency Policy (https://www.ama.org/journal-of-marketing-research-policy-for-research-transparency/). In this editorial, we will share some of our insights from implementing the policy over the past three years, provide examples and references for authors who use a range of methods in their research, and highlight the benefits of taking a collaborative approach to research transparency.JMR's Research Transparency Policy requires authors to submit their data, code, and methodological materials to JMR's collection on Harvard’s Dataverse (or follow an Alternative Disclosure Plan) after conditional acceptance. These materials are reviewed by our Data Editor, who reads the paper and verifies the empirical results reported in the text. We have explicitly framed JMR's Data Editor Review process not as an investigation but as a collaboration between authors and the journal to verify the paper's data and materials. Together, we’re able to catch small errors prior to publication and improve methodological transparency, clear wins for authors as well as the journal. As a result, most of the authors who have gone through the Data Editor Review process have become enthusiastic supporters of the policy despite the extra steps required of them.
