Abstract
This paper examines the backhaul problem of water freight across different regions of the world and seeks to elicit the determinants for the difference in prices of transportation cost. Findings also highlight the importance in taking into account both the front-haul and backhaul in the planning of sea freight routes on reducing environmental emissions as compared to considering each direction independently in the planning.
