Abstract

The same dollar, used by a woman, can have 20 times more impact on a child’s survival than the same dollar used by her male counterpart. Unfortunately, 70 percent of those stuck in the lower economic rungs in Asia, are women. With socio-cultural factors perpetuating gender-based disadvantages in this part of the world, much more has to be done to empower those caught at the bottom of society's 'pyramid'. That is why Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, founder of microfinance institution, Bandhan, has chosen to target his services towards women. According to him, empowering this group by just a little can go a long way in improving their livelihoods.
